Orkney Islands Council is advising motorists that black ice alerts remain in place for the rest of today (Thursday 3 December) and into the small hours of tonight.
The Council’s Roads team is also reminding drivers that with very little sunlight this time of year, road surface temperatures can remain stubbornly low, even if the air outside feels a bit warmer.
Drivers are urged to keep this difference between road surface temperatures and air temperatures - and temperature readings which might be displayed by gauges in their vehicles - in mind throughout winter and talk about it with new or inexperienced members of their household.
