Coronavirus (Covid-19) - Waste and recycling FAQs

Thanks to everyone in Orkney for their patience and understanding at this time and for showing your support by storing your recyclable waste and only putting out what can be collected.

Safety of our staff and everyone in Orkney is paramount and we have been working hard to make sure that we can deliver services in a way that is compliant with physical distancing and hygiene requirements whilst still continuing to manage the waste services.

Can I take my recycling to the recycling centre?

At the moment we are unable to accept recyclates that are collected at the kerbside: paper, plastic bottles, cans and glass at Hatston and Garson HWRC. Please dispose of these by using your kerbside collection. If you are struggling to store your recycling you can order up to 2 240L recycling bins free of charge, if you have the space for them. However, you can take recyclates to Hope HWRC and Cursiter HWRC. Please contact Customer Services on 873535 to make your request. For opening hours for the HWRCs during the Pandemic and what each of the sites that is open is currently accepting please visit this link (https://www.orkney.gov.uk/Council/C/coronavirus-covid-19-waste-and-recycling.htm).

You should only take waste to an HWRC if it cannot be stored safely at home. Please check to see if your local HWRC is open, accepting all the materials it usually accepts, or whether alternative services are available, before making an unnecessary journey. Social distancing must be observed at HWRCs, so services may be reduced and there may be queues.
