Coronavirus (Covid-19) - Waste and recycling FAQs

Thanks to everyone in Orkney for their patience and understanding at this time and for showing your support by storing your recyclable waste and only putting out what can be collected.

Safety of our staff and everyone in Orkney is paramount and we have been working hard to make sure that we can deliver services in a way that is compliant with physical distancing and hygiene requirements whilst still continuing to manage the waste services.

What are the changes to the collection of recycling at the kerbside (from 9 November 2020)?

We intend to move from the current weekly, single material collection to fortnightly 2-material collection. Reverts to alternate collection calendar but with 2 specified materials only on each recycling collection.

Put your recycling bins out on your usual recycling day.

Plastic bottles and glass will be collected on one cycle, metal cans and paper a fortnight later - this cycle would then repeat.

You can find the alternate collection calendar for your area here: https://www.orkney.gov.uk/Service-Directory/R/Domestic-Household-Waste-Mainland.htm

We ask therefore that everyone uses their bins to present the weekly recycling stream.  Caddies can be used for storage but shouldn’t be placed at the kerbside, either on their own or in addition to the bin. If you are struggling to store your recycling, you can order larger 240L recycling bins free of charge, if you have the space for them. Please contact Customer Services on 01856873535 to make your request.

We thank you for your patience and your efforts to help keep our crews safe as they continue to work hard during these continuing challenging circumstances.
