Coronavirus (Covid-19) - Waste and recycling FAQs

Thanks to everyone in Orkney for their patience and understanding at this time and for showing your support by storing your recyclable waste and only putting out what can be collected.

Safety of our staff and everyone in Orkney is paramount and we have been working hard to make sure that we can deliver services in a way that is compliant with physical distancing and hygiene requirements whilst still continuing to manage the waste services.

Why can’t I use the caddy out of my recycling bin instead of the bin?

Owing to physical distancing measures our service is currently using refuse carts to assist with our existing recycler fleet during this period of single stream collections.  In order to protect our crews and ensure that they can work safely, they are not permitted to hand tip caddies into the rear of the refuse cart, due to the automatic bin sensing lift mechanism, and the resultant risk to an operative operating within the bin lift area.

We ask therefore that everyone uses their bins to present the weekly recycling stream.  Caddies can be used for storage but shouldn’t be placed at the kerbside, either on their own or in addition to the bin.

We thank you for your patience and your efforts to help keep our crews safe as they continue to work hard during these continuing challenging circumstances.
