Coronavirus (Covid-19) - Waste and recycling FAQs

Thanks to everyone in Orkney for their patience and understanding at this time and for showing your support by storing your recyclable waste and only putting out what can be collected.

Safety of our staff and everyone in Orkney is paramount and we have been working hard to make sure that we can deliver services in a way that is compliant with physical distancing and hygiene requirements whilst still continuing to manage the waste services.

Why are St Margarets Hope and Cursiter household waste recycling centres not going to open at the same time?

These sites are not usually staffed but would need to be to ensure they meet national guidance on managing risks and social distancing.

We have also had to find additional staffing resources to help manage the re-opening of Hatston (Kirkwall) and Garson (Stromness) to meet this guidance. Therefore, we are not in a position to open all 5 sites at the present time.

In addition, the impacts of physical distancing requirements means that we are having to use more drivers than usual on kerbside collection routes. This means that they are not available to service the skips at these sites
