Coronavirus (Covid-19) - Waste and recycling FAQs

Thanks to everyone in Orkney for their patience and understanding at this time and for showing your support by storing your recyclable waste and only putting out what can be collected.

Safety of our staff and everyone in Orkney is paramount and we have been working hard to make sure that we can deliver services in a way that is compliant with physical distancing and hygiene requirements whilst still continuing to manage the waste services.

What do I have to do when I visit the household waste recycling site?

We need to follow national government guidance on social distancing.  In Scotland that means staying 2 metres apart.  There will be restrictions on the number of vehicles that can come onto the site at any one time. For Hatston (Kirkwall) this is 5 vehicles and at Garson (Stromness), as it is a smaller site, it will be 3 vehicles.

We cannot offer assistance at the sites for example to help you carry items from your car to a skip.  You should dispose of your items and leave the site as quickly as possible to allow other vehicles entry and to help to avoid congestion.
