The Coronavirus pandemic has led to many sudden changes in the way we lead our day to day lives. There is a great deal of information – and indeed mis-information – circulating and we recognise this is a difficult time for all.

The purpose of this guidance is to clarify how Orkney Islands Council staff should act during this outbreak. This guidance is designed to inform and work alongside the Council’s local business continuity plans and resilience arrangements. The FAQ’s are being reviewed and updated on a frequent basis.

Current HR policies and terms and conditions of employment remain in place, but may be amended in future if necessary.

I have been asked to undertake a different work to my normal role, this role has a different grade and different terms and conditions what will I be paid?

For any period that you are asked to undertake alternative work by the Council you will continue to be paid your normal pay. Where your normal pay includes a contractual requirement to shift work, night work or sleep ins and the role you are being redeployed to does not, you will continue to receive payment of these.

Should the work that you are being asked to undertake have a higher rate of pay, you will be paid the relevant rate of pay and allowances for that role, rather than your normal pay for your substantive post.
