"As a Council we are heading into unchartered territory.
Never before have we faced making cuts on such a scale."
Last winter we ran Orkney Islands Council’s largest ever engagement exercise.
In response to the tough economic times we all face, we set out to discover which Council services are most valued by the Orkney public - through our roadshow of 20 public meetings, the Councils first ever blog, and letters and emails from you.
We asked as well for your ideas for ways the Council can save money. The response from the public was gratifying to say the least. The road shows drew a total audience of almost 700 people. The blog attracted more than 276 replies, generating 585 ideas for us to consider.
We logged everything you’ve told us. In all, by a wide variety of means, we received 1769 responses from the public. We have published a special leaflet which summarises the ideas and opinions gathered during the Tough Times-Tough Choices engagement process. You'll find the leaflet under the 'Tough Times Publications' link in the 'Related Downloads' section of this page.
Thank you to all those who have took part in the Tough Times engagement. I hope, like me, that you’ll conclude that it was a worthwhile exercise.
The Council is already implementing some 'Tough Times - Tough Choices' service changes as part of efforts to make £4m of savings in the 2010-11 financial year. You'll find current Tough Times consultations, along with other Council consultations, under the Related Links section on this page.
