Disability Equality Scheme

The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 places a general duty on all public authorities to promote disability equality. In particular, the Council must set out what it should do to plan, deliver, and evaluate action to eliminate disability discrimination and promote equality.

Orkney Islands Council’s Disability Equalities Scheme, alongside the Disabilty Equality Schemes of the Education Authority, meets these requirements and contributes towards our goal of promoting good equalities practice across all our services.

OIC Disability Equality Scheme

The OIC Disability Equality Scheme sets out our plans as a Council, for helping to make equality more of a reality for disabled people living in Orkney.  The scheme will set out principles and actions that will need to be achieved across every service that we deliver.

It has been shaped around the views of disabled people and the requirements of the General and Specific Duties of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005.  However, this is the first step in an evolving process.  As time goes on we hope to build upon the Scheme, and develop processes which will provide meaningful progress in terms of promoting disability equality Orkney-wide.

This scheme was put together incorporating the views of people with a disability, but we want to involve many more people in the process. Please get in touch with us, if you would like to play a part in ensuring Disability Equality is considered in the way that our services are delivered in the future, or would like to comment on any part of the Disability Equality Scheme.

The Disability Equality Scheme is available as a PDF from the  'Related Downloads' section on this page, along with the most recent Annual Report.

Combined Equality Scheme

The combined scheme will replace the Council's existing schemes for:
