We are undertaking a review of the provision of registration services in Orkney's island communities. Registrations (of births and deaths, not marriages) take place on the following islands, North Ronaldsay, Papa Westray, Westray, Sanday, Stronsay, Eday, Hoy and Flotta. These registrations are carried out manually and the number of registrations is shown in tables 1, 2 and 3 of the consultation document available in the Related Downloads section of this webpage.
We are considering a range of options. These are:
Retain the status quo, i.e. registrars will be phased out through natural turnover.
Centralise all island registration offices to Kirkwall. This option would remove the duplication of work carried out by the Kirkwall office, enable budget savings, and ensure future changes in registration can be accommodated.
Retain the manual home-based offices in Westray, Sanday, Stronsay and Hoy and close the smaller island offices. This option would retain island based employment but not remove the duplication of work and may restrict the ability to make improvements or further develop the service.
Full background information is available in the consultation document, which is available from the Related Downloads section of the website.
