Homecare Consultation

This consultation closed on September 9, 2013.

Feedback is requested as part of a consultation into the possibility of home care services being provided by an organisation other than Orkney Health and Care (OHAC).

During the two-month consultation period, views and ideas will be sought from people who use home care services, carers and staff.

This follows an independent study which recommended that OHAC, a partnership between Orkney Islands Council and NHS Orkney, should assess how best to provide home care in the county.

As a result, an exercise was carried out earlier this year to see if other organisations would be interested in providing some or all of the home care services currently delivered by OHAC.

In all, 26 expressions of interest were received from a wide range of organisations, some of them companies that provide home care services elsewhere in the country, others locally based.

Caroline Sinclair, Head of Service with OHAC, said: “When you look at other areas of the country, Orkney Health and Care is fairly unusual in providing home care services itself.

“At this stage we are simply considering whether these important services could be delivered more effectively – and more efficiently – in other ways.

“So we are keen to get feedback about the possibility of home care services in Orkney being provided by other organisations on our behalf – or whether they should continue to be delivered by OHAC.

“It is particularly important that we hear from people who use or provide home care services, but the wider Orkney community is welcome to take part as well.

“No decisions have been taken – any changes to the way services are delivered will only be made once the Board of Orkney Health and Care has considered all the views and suggestions we receive through the consultation.”

To take part in the consultation please provide answers to the following questions:

  1. How would you feel about home care services being provided by a company or organisation other that Orkney Health and Care?
  2. What do you think the effect might be on people who use the service?
  3. What do you think the effect might be on staff who deliver the service?
  4. What are the potential benefits of a change of this kind?
  5. What if anything would concern you about a change of this kind?
  6. Are there any changes we could make to the current home care service?
  7. Is there anything else you would like to highlight as part of this consultation?

You can complete an online survey in the “Related Sites” section of this page, send an email to OHAC Feedback or phone the Home Care Manager on 01856 888390.

In addition, letters inviting feedback will be sent shortly to everyone who uses home care services in Orkney and to staff.

During the consultation, which closes on September 9, a number of drop-in meetings will be held at various locations in the county, to give people the chance to ask questions and pass on their views. The dates and venues will be announced later.
