End of Term Highlights
2022
Boost for local groups
We signed over the former Herring Factory building in Stromness to three local groups - Orkney Men’s Shed, Stromness Drama Club and the Orkney Historic Boat Society - and the Stromness Squash Courts to the Orkney Weightlifting Club . ‘The Smithy’ on Shapinsay will receive a new lease of life, after the Council agreed to sell the property to the Shapinsay Development Trust.
Happy Campers
Ness Point campsite in Stromness is undergoing improvement work - we were awarded £260k from the Scottish Government’s Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund to upgrade the amenities, and install more hard standing pitches, solar and ground source energy systems and improved chemical waste disposal.
Community Facilities
Construction of the St Andrews Primary School extension continues - building work started in March 2021. Work is also continuing on plans for a new £14m care home and a new childcare facility in Kirkwall- with works due to get underway this year.
