Care at Home Service
Orkney Health and Care provides flexible, person-centred care at home, helping people live as independently as possible while supporting carers in their role.
What We Provide
We offer support 365 days a year, including help with washing, dressing, toileting, medication, mobility, eating, and meal preparation. We can also help with light household tasks linked to personal care, and night support is available where needed.
What We Don't Provide
Carers can't do your shopping if a delivery service is available, use your bank card, cut nails, carry out medical procedures, care for pets, or give massages.
Who Can Apply
Anyone aged 18 or over who needs help with daily living at home. You, your GP, or another health professional can refer you by contacting the Orkney Health and Care Duty Worker. A social worker will then visit to assess your needs, create a Support Plan, and advise on costs and any benefits you may be entitled to.
What It Costs
For people over 65, personal care and meal preparation are free. Other services may be chargeable, based on your income and savings. If you choose not to share your financial details, you may be charged the maximum rate.
Your Support Plan
Developed with you, this sets out what carers will help with, your contacts, and your preferences. A small, consistent team will deliver your care, and all carers carry photo ID. Visits are tracked electronically to ensure they happen on time.
Key Rules
- Please don't offer gifts or cash to carers
- Don't smoke while carers are in your home, or for an hour before a visit
- If pests are identified, please deal with this promptly
- Any equipment needed for safe moving must be in place before care begins
Reviews
Your service is reviewed after six weeks, then every six months. You can bring a family member or advocate to any review.
