Traffic Controls at the Barriers

Traffic Controls at the Barriers
08 December 2017

Temporary traffic controls are being put in place at Barrier No. 2 today for safety reasons, following significant storm damage yesterday.

Yesterday's Storm Caroline saw the loss of a total of approximately 100 metres of crash barrier from either side of the causeway. This has led to the road not being safe enough to allow two way traffic, so traffic lights will be used from later this morning to control a single file traffic system until assessment and repairs can be carried out.

A police convoy supported by the Council was in place overnight to direct traffic across.

High tide at the Barriers is at 2.30pm today and with the poor weather continuing throughout the day they will remain under review. Updates will be posted on the OIC_Roads Twitter feed and the Council's OIC Updates Facebook page.

Darren Richardson is the Council's Head of Roads and Infrastructure. He said: "Yesterday's conditions were a challenge for us and the public alike. We worked closely with our colleagues in the police throughout the day and worked as fast as we could when it was safe to remove the crash barrier.

"We apologise for the ongoing disruption but safety has to be our paramount concern. We'd advise the travelling public to keep up to date on the latest developments through the usual channels."
