The children of Evie School have been helping put a “spring in the step” of the residents of Smiddybrae House, and the wider community, with some Easter artwork.Evie pupils creating artwork for Smiddybrae residents.Evie school bairns creating artwork.

During the lockdown earlier this year, 28 pupils created 64 pieces of artwork using a Spring theme for the residents of Smiddybrae in Dounby.

Evie Head Teacher, Emma Ritchie, explained how the “Reaching out with Kindness” idea spread a little cheer.

“A parent who works at Smiddybrae noticed that the Christmas pictures needed updating so several of our pupils – Harvey, Jackson and their older sister Madeline – were inspired to help. Harvey went on to share his contribution as a ‘proud moment’ for him during lockdown.

“The idea began to grow and the Primary 5/6/7 class decided to ask the school to help them ‘Reach out with Kindness’ to the people who usually come to the school for the senior citizen’s lunch and some others in our community.Resident at Smiddybrae showing some Evie pupil's artwork.

“Nursery and every primary class designed artwork on the themes of ‘Spring, Flowers, and Easter’ to spread warmth and cheer. The children taking part in remote learning also sent in pictures and artwork to contribute.Smiddybrae resident with artwork.

“The children in school made individual cards with art from every class to let the local residents (and some grandparents) know that we are thinking of them and wishing them well during lockdown. "Reaching out with Kindness" helped to raise a smile and let those close to our community know that we are thinking of them.”

Marina Stanger, Manager at Smiddybrae, said: “It is fantastic and shows how lucky we are to have such community spirit made even more special coming from the children and demonstrates intergenerational spirit at its best.”

Comments from the residents included:

“The joy that receiving these from the kids in the community is great.”
“Makes my day.”
“Miss visits from the school bairns.”
“Love getting something cheery in the post.”
