Anyone interested in finding out more about palette knife painting techniques should head along to The Orkney Museum on Saturday 10 December for a free demonstration by artist Tim Wootton.

This has been a new departure for him, as he explained: “Palette knives come in many shapes and sizes – much like regular paint brushes do. The principle is similar – mix the thick paint on the palette, collect a certain amount of paint on the blade and smear or dab the blade across the surface of the painting. It’s a bit like using decorator’s filler – sometimes the results look the same too!

“I started using palette knives in the beginning of 2021. I was searching for a new way to paint as a personal challenge. I’ve always mixed my approach to making images using various techniques; drawing in charcoal and Sharpie pen, painting in watercolour, oil and acrylic etc.”

Tim’s exhibition ‘Painting In The Darkness’ is currently running at the Orkney Museum, Tankerness House. There are 91 small format paintings, all of which (bar one) have been painted using palette knives.

He added: “It’s an exciting way to put paint on board. I will be demonstrating some of my personal methods of using knives with paint on Saturday 10 December. I often use knives when painting ‘plein air’ (working outside in nature). They give a spontaneity to the work. They’re also great to use in the studio environment. Pop along on Saturday for an informal demonstration and chat about my paintings. Questions very much encouraged.”

Tim Wootton’s demonstration will be held in the temporary exhibition room at The Orkney Museum from 1.30pm-4.30pm. Everyone is welcome. The event is free and there is no need to book a place, just drop by.
