An update on community events on Hoy on Saturday 17 September when Sir Chris Hoy will visit the island and formally open the newly redeveloped Scapa Flow Museum:

On Saturday 17 September there is to be a fun filled community event for all the family with a range of different stalls as well as a fun cycle.

The fun 1.5 mile cycle with Sir Chris Hoy will take place at 13.30 from the Scapa Flow Museum car park - please remember your bike helmets!

This will be followed by a short presentation for the children from North Walls School who have completed their Bikeability course as well as participation certificates for those who took part in the cycle with Sir Chris.

There will be a host of local clubs including the Hoy Hounds with displays at 11.15 and 14.15, the Lifeboat Museum who will take their model along, the Lego club, RSPB and craft club as well as the Lifeboat Guild providing delicious food and refreshments. The Peedie Bite will also be situated near the Orkney Ferries waiting room and the Lifeboat will host a ‘Yellow Welly’ day too.

The Blide trust are coming along to promote the services they offer and speak about how exercise can help mental health.

Cycling UK will have a range of bikes from electric to accessible cycles and affordable bikes for all the family. Cycle Orkney will also be on hand to offer folk a basic bike service and provide some minor maintenance. There will also be an appearance from some very cute Alpacas, and music by Deanna Johnston. All community activities kick off at 11am.

Please note that the Scapa Flow Museum will be closed to the public until 2pm and the café will be closed all day. The updated sailings between Houton and Lyness can be found at www.orkneyferries.co.uk and amended bus timetable can be found at www.orkney.gov.uk/hoyonhoy.
