Waste and Recycling Strike update – Monday 29 August

Date: 29 August 2022

Due to the continued national strike action over pay, there will be no waste or recycling collections in Orkney today, Monday.

This will affect Mainland areas 1 and 6 for refuse, area 9 for recycling and commercial waste. Collections on Westray are going ahead.

There will be no litter bin emptying throughout the county today either.

Hatston and Garson HWRCs are closed as per normal on a Monday. These will reopen tomorrow, Tuesday, but the time is dependent on skip emptying – again folks, we will have to update as we can.

Cursiter and St Margaret’s Hope are open today – the duration will depend on how quickly the skips fill up.

Please hold on to your rubbish and recycling if you can folks as we cannot guarantee additional runs will be possible given the limited resources – however, officers are looking at various options and, again, we will advise as we can.

The action is in response to the ongoing national dispute in relation to a pay award for Local Government staff for the year 2022-23 which is negotiated between the Trade Unions and CoSLA as the umbrella body for Local Government.

If there is no resolution, further strikes are planned for 7 – 10 September.
