Voters decide who will represent them in the Council chamber for the next five years

Orkney voters have determined who they wish to represent them within Orkney Islands Council for the next five years.

There will be a number of new faces joining returning councillors to the chamber representing Orkney’s six wards.

The wards and councillors are:

Stromness and South Isles (3 seats) James Stockan, Graham Bevan and Lindsay Hall.

West Mainland (4 seats) Owen Tierney, Rachael King, Jean Stevenson and Duncan Tullock.

East Mainland, South Ronaldsay and Burray (3 seats) Raymie Peace, Gillian Skuse and James Moar.

North Isles (3 seats) Heather Woodbridge, Stephen Clackson and Melissa Thomson.

Kirkwall East (4 seats) John Ross Scott, Gwenda Shearer, Steven Heddle and David Dawson.

Kirkwall West and Orphir (4 seats) Leslie Manson, Sandy Cowie, Ivan Taylor and Kristopher Leask.

A total of 35 people stood for the 21 seats. Those elected will represent their constituents for the coming five years.

Following the count and results announced at the Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall today (May 6), OIC Returning Officer, John Mundell, said: “I would like to thank my depute Returning Officers Karen Greaves and Gareth Waterson, along with all my election team and staff, colleagues in the council. An extra special thanks as always must go to Fiona Ratter and Audrey Waterson for their exceptional contribution in making  the whole election process a success.

“I also wish to thank the electoral registration team who have played a significant part in delivering the count here in Kirkwall. I appreciate that many of you have invested countless hours in what you believe in, and you must be exhausted. I would like to thank you all for attending the count and for your patience during the count process.”

The overall turnout percentage was 48.83%.

There are currently 17,713 registered electors in Orkney, 6102 of whom have a postal vote.
