Inter-Isles Connectivity STAG Study
A variety of problems exist on all the inter-isles services, which in some instances are becoming particularly acute. The three Outer North Isles vessels are regularly operating in open seas over significant distance, which in the UK is unique to a Local Authority operation. After 1st July 2010 none of the three vessels will meet regulatory requirements and none will be able to operate the Outer North Isles Network. In the Inner and South Isles network there are severe capacity constraints, and particularly in the summer months. On some of the routes there are problems with carrying heavy goods too and from the isles, and on some routes there are problems associated with the reliability of the present vessels.
The Scottish Transport Appraisal Guidance [ STAG] study has the aim of establishing what option or options will be best placed to overcome the problems, constraints and opportunities that present themselves in the inter-isles network. Various study documents can be found below.
Help shape the future of inter-isles services – we want to hear your views on the programme that is being put forward. Please provide comments by emailing or writing to the Transportation Service at Orkney Islands Council.
