Museums
There are a wide range of museums and visitor attractions across Orkney, run by both Orkney Islands Council and independent trusts. As well as responsibiity for management of the Council's four Accredited Museums, three visitor centres and a range of sites interpreted by panels, the Arts, Museums and Heritage Service also manages St Magnus Cathedral.
The Arts, Museums and Heritage Service provides an overview of, and umbrella support for, the independent Heritage Sector in Orkney, providing grant aid, training, curatorial advice and other help as necessary.
The Orkney Museums archaeology collections, are recognised as a collection of national significance under the Government's Recognised Collections Scheme.
There are many museums and visitor centres in Orkney, including the Pier Arts Centre, Stromness Museum, Orkney Wireless Museum, Westray Heritage Centre and the Orkney Fossil and Heritage Centre.
