Schools
Orkney has a school population of approximately 3,000. There are two senior secondary schools located in the main towns of Kirkwall and Stromness. Three Junior High Schools, located on Westray, Sanday and Stronsay, provide education from nursery up to secondary school fourth year and the North Walls Junior High provides education from nursery up to secondary second year.
There are 17 Primary Schools and a Halls of Residence, located in Kirkwall, to permit island pupils to attend Kirkwall Grammar School. The Council encourages wide community use of the school estate, recognising school buildings as a valuable community asset. Of the Council’s 17 primary schools, 15 are designated as community schools are there is some community use of all our schools.
