Profiles of Councillors

The political map of Orkney has changed and there are now six multi-member wards, with three or four Councillors representing the people in each.

There are still 21 Councillors, but they now have the responsibility of representing larger wards with more people and differing views.

Each Councillor has the job of representing the people of the ward they are elected to serve (in the same way that Liam McArthur, as MSP for the islands, represents the people of Orkney).

Politically, Orkney Islands Council is unusual among local authorities in having an entirely independent Council. With no party line to tread, the members of the Council can truly claim to be servants of the communities they represent.
