THE SMIDDY MUSEUM

St Margaret's Hope

A restored blacksmith's shop which contains equipment and machinery ranging over the past century along with a collection of horse-drawn implements and other smith-made artefacts. HOY KIRK

North Hoy

Although the present kirk is only 110 years old it has a wooden pulpit from a galleon of the Spanish Armada dated 1624, topped by a simple wooden cross from HMS Vanguard (World War I) created by a Marine who made this island his home.  The wooden roof and floor provide excellent acoustics for concerts held here.  Telephone: 01856 791262

 

CROW'S NEST

Rackwick, Hoy

A traditional Croft House and Steading dating from the early 18th Century on the brae above Rackwick.  The house has two box beds, a dresser, open fireplace and a hook for pots and laundry area.  The peaty aroma gives an ambience of olden times.  The steading includes a barn with a kiln used for drying oats and a byre.

SCAPA FLOW VISITOR CENTRE & MUSEUM

Lyness, Hoy

The former naval base, HMS Prosperine, from Wold War II, includes extensive photographic displays, many artefacts and an impressive audio-visual display sited inside a huge oil tank.  Exhibits include the scuttling of the German Fleet and the sinking of HMS Royal Oak. Telephone: 01856 791300

LONGHOPE LIFEBOAT MUSEUM

1901 Lifeboat House and slipway containing 1932 Watson Lifeboat "Thomas McCunn" (Longhope Lifeboat 1933-1962) the only launchable slipway vintage life boat in the UK.  Exhibition of old photos and memorabilia - video by appointment.  Telephone:  01856 701322 or 701460

 

MARTELLO TOWERS

Longhope, Hoy

Built on either side of Longhope Bay in 1813 to protect Baltic convoys form the United States Navy and American privateers.  The Hackness (south) tower is open to the public.
