Orkney’s fourth Healthy Living Centre opens its doors on Saturday (June 24) in North Walls.
Customers will be able to take advantage of a range of special offers and the Centre’s committee will host activities such as the mobile climbing wall, football, Top Sport, badminton, traditional dancing and swimming.
The Centre has the latest, high quality, fitness equipment and will be supervised by qualified Fitness Advisors, who have completed 120 hours of home study and a three-day theoretical and practical assessment.
Kieran Henderson, Recreation Services Manager, said ‘The Fitness Advisors, Head Teacher and Centre Committee Chairperson have worked together over a number of months to prepare for the opening, while the whole community has come together to provide an exciting programme for the day. There has been great enthusiasm for the facility, and I am sure that it will be well used and benefit both sports people and those wishing to improve their general health and well-being.’
Chairperson for the Centre Committee, Mabel Besant, said: "North Walls Centre have been negotiating for this facility for a long time and we are delighted that it has become reality. It is a fantastic facility for the community in a time of health awareness. Our volunteer committee and newly trained fitness advisors have been working very hard to get ready for the opening so I would like to say a big thank you to them and all who have worked so hard to make this happen for our island."
Further facilities are planned for Rousay, Westray and Stronsay. The network of seven Centres is scheduled for completion in 2007 and has been funded jointly by the Council and sportscotland.
