Looking after our own

A campaign to find urgently needed foster carers for young children in the county has been launched by Orkney Health and Care’s fostering team.
‘Looking after our own’ aims to encourage everyone to consider whether they could make room in their family for a child in need.
Around 40 children in Orkney have needed foster care over the past three years.
Orkney Islands Council fostering and adoption social worker, Jane Beckwith, said: “Our current foster carers are absolutely fantastic and do an incredible job of looking after some of the most vulnerable children in our community.
“However, there is a pressing need for at least four new foster families to provide anything from short term relief for our existing foster carers to looking after a child longer term.”
Children may need foster care for many reasons. Councillor Roderick McLeod, Chair of OIC’s Social Services and Housing Committee, said: “Increasing our pool of foster carers would boost our ability to ‘match’ children in need with families and carers who are best able to meet their needs - and that’s something we really want to be able to do as often as we can.”

'Hoy Hopper' service disruption
The ferry mv Hoy Head has had major engine problems and will be replaced by the mv Thorsvoe.
The Hoy Hopper timetable will change in line with the Hoy Head timetable. Passengers leaving Kirkwall Travel Centre will need to get on the Service bus number 2 at 09:20am, which connects with the ferry at Houton leaving at 10:15am and arriving in Lyness at 10:50am.
On Hoy, the bus will leave Longhope at 09:30am and arrive at Moaness at 10:10am to meet ferry heading to Graemsay. The bus will leave Moaness at 10.10am (ie it will not be able to wait for the ferry arriving at 10.30am) arriving in Lyness at 10:40am to meet the Ferry coming in from Houton.
The timetable will continue as scheduled returning to Lyness at 15:05pm. The bus will not return to Moaness in the afternoon. Passengers can visit the Lyness museum and/or cemetery before catching the 16:40pm ferry back connecting with the 17:35pm bus from Houton to Kirkwall.
