Kirkwall offers some unique challenges and opportunities for travel for people who may need an extra helping hand to plan and make their journeys independently, whether on foot or using the bus.  One of its key merits is being a small, safe, close knit and supportive community where many people know each other and provide friendly informal support.  This is a very rare attribute in urban areas in the IK.  As such, Kirkwall is entirely appropriate to develop a sustainable travel programme tailored to those who need a little extra support to travel sustainably.

The KIST scheme will use four tools from our toolkit:

- Website

- Bus Buddies

- Travel Training

- Awaireness Raising Workshops

KIST will aim to encourage all to use public transport in and around Kirkwall, but our focus will be on younger people with special needs, older people and visitors.
