What Makes A Good Foster Carer?

What kind of person makes a good foster carer?
There is no ‘type’ of person who makes a good foster carer. Our current foster carers are people of all ages who come from a variety of backgrounds.
Some are single while others are married or in long term relationships. Some have children of their own living at home, many don’t.
The background of all prospective foster carers is thoroughly checked. However, minor criminal offences, including teenage misdemeanours, may not affect how applications are viewed.
There are some things we expect from our foster carers.
They should:
- Enjoy being with children.
- Have patience and lots of energy!
- Understand and be able to empathise with a troubled child who has experienced difficulties in their life.
- Not expect anything in return from the child.
- Be able to work with professionals and the child’s parents and family members.
- Treat every individual with respect, regardless of their lifestyle, actions or circumstances.
- Be willing to learn new skills and to undergo training.
- Have a spare bedroom.
What we are looking for are people who will do their best to provide a vulnerable baby, child or teenager with a safe and loving home and who will stick with them through the hard times.
