Working together for a better Orkney

Waste Transfer Site

The Waste Transfer Site, located at Chinglebraes, is where all the domestic waste collected in Orkney used to be burnt.

Today the plant has a different role. All household rubbish is delivered to Chinglebraes, along with waste that cannot be buried at the landfill site, located at Bossack. It is then baled up and shipped to Shetland Islands Council’s waste-to-energy centre. There the bales are incinerated to provide hot water for Lerwick’s district heating scheme.

Restricted Entry

Entry to Chinglebraes is restricted. So if you are a householder with something to dump, please take it to one of our Household Waste Recycling Centres, which are listed on the Recycling Centres page of this site. Special collections of waste can also be arranged, and details of this service can be found on the Business Waste page . Links to both pages can be found at the 'Related Links' section on this page.
