The Arts, Museums and Heritage service operate the Art in Public Places scheme. Although no new acquisitions have been made to the council’s art collection for a number of years the existing collection is made accessible to the public in schools, colleges, Orkney Library and Archive and other public buildings.
In 2015 two new outdoor public art commissions were launched at the new Stromness Primary and Kirkwall Grammar Schools.
The new commissions were managed and funded by the Schools Investment Programme, the LEADER programme and the arts development service. The recruitment was coordinated through a steering group including representatives from OIC’s Arts Development Service, the Pier Arts Centre, Orkney College Art and Design Department and the Art Departments of both schools. The commissions include workshops and school/community engagement.
