Your Household Collection Service - Isles
This section details services relating to the safe collection and disposal of Household waste and recycling for the Outer Isles in Orkney.
In an effort to increase recycling rates in the County, encourage reduced consumption and waste generation, and save on waste collection costs, Orkney Islands Council (OIC) has - like the majority of all other Scottish Local Authorities, introduced an Alternate Weekly Collection in 2012 (AWC) on the Mainland and two of the Outer Isles. Under this scheme, domestic refuse is collected one week and recyclable items the next. On the Islands of Westray and Shapinsay, alternate weekly refuse and recycling collections are carried out, following a pilot on these Isles. However, on the remaining Outer Isles, the service differs and a weekly bag collection remains at the moment.
In an effort to improve the capacity for residents to recycle on the Outer Isles, OIC has invested in additional capacity during 2015/2016 at central collection points. More recently in 2016, every resident on the Outer Isles can opt to receive up to two wheeled bins for the safe storage of their domestic refuse and/or recyclables. You will find details of the collection dates for Westray and Shapinsay and a guide to the items you can recycle on the 'Alternate Weekly Collections - Islands' page available from the menu on this page.
