Did you know that 80% of litter in Scotland’s marine environment is transported there from land by rivers, drainage or wind?
Here on Orkney, we do an annual ‘Bag the Bruck’ where beaches and coastal areas are cleaned by willing volunteers. This usually takes place during April of each year.
Throughout the rest of year, members of the public are asked to ‘pick up three pieces’ of rubbish on their visits to the beach and coasts. Pick up three pieces has a number of waste bin sites around Orkney where the public can discard these items. A link is available from the 'Related Sites' section of this page.
If a bin is not present, don’t just leave the bruck piled up or in bags – please take it home with you or to one of our nearest household waste recycling centres.
