When we are faced with a serious illness we hope that an operation or other treatment will cure it completely. Sometimes, in serious disease like many cancers, a cure is not possible. Palliative care aims to maintain and as far as possible, improve quality of life for patients and their families.

It is important to note that palliative care is not limited to just people with cancer, but can be made available to anyone whose illness or disease may benefit from an active palliative care programme.

Orkney Macmillan House

Orkney Macmillan House is a four-bedded unit, providing in-patient, outpatient treatment and day facilities for cancer patients at the Balfour Hospital.

The staff aims to provide an informal and comfortable environment combined with up to date and evidence based treatment for patients with cancer.

Practical advice and help are also extended to the patient's family and friends to allow them to cope with the effects of the illness. In close liaison with other disciplines, Macmillan House aims to offer medical and nursing oncology and palliative care. This includes pain control, symptom management, blood transfusions and chemotherapy.

Additional care includes lymphoedema management, palliative care rehabilitation and emotional support for the patient and the family.

The Highland Hospice
