Scotland’s Employer Recruitment Incentive (SERI)

What is SERI?

SERI focuses on supporting young people who are experiencing the greatest barriers to employment to obtain and remain in sustainable employment, including Modern Apprenticeships by assisting employers with offsetting the costs of recruiting a young person during the first 52 weeks of their employment.

Who can apply?

SERI funding is available to companies of any size in the private or third sector who are committing to employing an eligible young person aged 16-29 years old in a new job or Modern Apprenticeship.

The young person must be employed for a minimum of 16 hours per week for at least 52 weeks and must fit in to one of the eligible groups for SERI support.

Full details of the eligibility criteria is available in PDF format from the ‘Related Downloads’ section of this page.

Support is not offered for zero hour contracts or for public sector organisations.

What funding is available?

Employers could receive up to £4,000 to assist with the costs of recruiting and sustaining an eligible young person in employment, including Modern Apprenticeships, for the first 52 weeks of their employment.

Payments are made in instalments at set periods throughout the employment once confirmation has been received that the young person is still in employment. Payments are made at:

  • 4 weeks - £600.
  • 13 weeks - £1,400.
  • 52 weeks - £2,000.

An additional payment of £500 will be awarded to employers who are paying the young person the current Living Wage. Further information on the Living Wage is available from the ‘Related Sites’ section of this page.

How do I apply?

The incentive is available for job starts from 1 April 2017 to 31 January 2018. However, there are a limited number of places available for funding and applications will be dealt with on a first come, first served basis. Once fully allocated the programme will close to new starts.

Employers should contact Orkney Islands Council to discuss the possibility of funding and to request an application form.
