Alternative Care

There are around 600 voluntary organisations, a significant number of which provide care services in the community. Paid staff and volunteers play a vital part in delivering a range of Community Care services throughout Orkney. These groups can be found within the Related Sites section of this page.

Partnership Working

The Department of Community Social Services and NHS Orkney works in partnership with a large number of these organisations to provide a range of services from low level preventative services (e.g. funding of lunch clubs) to commissioning and spot purchasing key community care services (e.g. Crossroads Orkney).

This list is not exhaustive, there are numerous other community groups with a care remit which don’t necessarily fall under the umbrella of direct service provision. However, they do provide preventative and maintenance support for vulnerable people.

Voluntary Action Orkney

Voluntary Action Orkney is Orkney’s Council for Voluntary Services and as such supports the sector to grow and develop both at a local and national level.
