New Councillor Elected
28 November 2014

Leslie Manson has been elected as a councillor for Orkney's Kirkwall West and Orphir ward in this week's by election.

Voters went to the polls yesterday and a count was carried out in the Council chamber this morning (Friday 28 November).

There were four candidates standing in the election - Mr Manson, Laurence Leonard, Lorraine McBrearty and Gillian Skuse. Sadly, Mr Leonard passed away last week, but the Council was legally required to continue with the count and therefore he was still listed as a candidate on the ballot papers.

The first preference votes cast were as follows;

Laurence Leonard - 55
Lorraine McBrearty - 142
Leslie Manson - 647
Gillian Skuse - 281

The turnout for the election was 31.32%. There were 1125 valid ballot papers and five rejected ballot papers.

Mr Manson takes on the seat vacated by Jack Moodie, who resigned in September.
