Illuminating the benefits of Fair Trade

Illuminating the benefits of Fair Trade
28 February 2017

St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall will be lit blue and green on Friday night (3 March) – Fairtrade’s trademark colours.

It will mark the midpoint of Fairtrade Fortnight 2017.

In Orkney a range of events are taking place, all aimed at encouraging people to ‘buy fair and local’.

Fairtrade Zone accreditation was first awarded to the islands in 2014 in response to a campaign led by the Orkney Fair Trade Group with the backing of Orkney Islands Council.

Gillian Morrison, the Council’s Executive Director of Corporate Services, said: “The group has worked hard to maintain the accreditation ever since, promoting both locally produced food and fairly traded goods from overseas.

“The Council is demonstrating its ongoing commitment by supporting the illumination of the Cathedral in blue and green. It will look spectacular – a great reminder of the importance of Fair Trade.”
