Consultation on KGS school week
20 January 2012

A consultation starts today on plans to change the weekly timetable at Kirkwall Grammar School.

The aim is to ensure that new changes to the curriculum can be put in place for all pupils at the school.

This includes a requirement that Physical Education (PE) and Religious and Moral Education (RME) are provided for all year groups. The change would also allow the implementation of the national Curriculum for Excellence into the middle school.

The school is proposing that the timetable should be amended to have 32 periods each week, of 50 minutes each, plus additional daily tutor time. This is a change from the current 29-period week, when most lessons are for 55 minutes.

The new timetable would also result in a change to the school day, which currently starts at 8.45am and ends at 3.25pm.

Mondays and Tuesdays would be seven-period days – with a start time of 8.35am and a finish time of 3.35pm.

On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays there would be six periods, with the school day starting at 8.35am and finishing at 2.45pm.

Head teacher Sheila Dick said: “Pupils will spend exactly the same amount of time in school each week as they do at present.

“By having extra periods in the timetable, we can ensure that pupils across the age groups receive PE and RME – something we can’t offer to all pupils under the current arrangements.

“Both are important subjects and there is a Government requirement that we provide them for our pupils. The change would also allow wider implementation of the Curriculum for Excellence.

“I am confident that this change to our timetable will result in a better educational experience for young people across the school.”

As part of the consultation, letters are being sent to all parents explaining the proposed new arrangements and inviting them to respond to a questionnaire.

Parents are also invited to attend one of the special consultation sessions being held in the Conference Room at KGS on Monday February 6 at:

  • 4 – 5pm
  • 5.30 – 6.30pm
  • 7 – 8pm

A meeting will also be held at Rousay School on Tuesday February 7 at 2.15pm for parents of KGS pupils from Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre.

Parents unable to attend at these times can meet the head teacher during an additional drop-in session at KGS between 4 – 6pm on Thursday February 16.

Those who would prefer to phone can call the school on 01856 872102.

The consultation questionnaire should be returned to the School Office by Wednesday 22 February. It is also available through the school website and email returns can be sent to admin.kgs@orkneyschools.org.uk

Initial consultation has already taken place with KGS staff, KGS Parent Council and Orkney Islands Council’s Education Service.
