Orkney Islands Council
Working together for a better Orkney
Tribute to a passionate advocate for Orkney
06 January 2012

Tributes have been paid following the death of the Stromness and South Isles Councillor John Eccles.

Councillor Eccles had been an Elected Member of Orkney Islands Council since May 2007. He was chair of the Council's Education and Leisure Committee and had previously served as chair of the Orkney Ferries board.

During his earlier career in education, Councillor Eccles was head teacher at Eday and Dounby primary schools and North Walls junior high school.

Council Convener, Councillor Stephen Hagan, said: "John's sudden death is very sad news and has come as a great shock to all of us.

"Among his Council colleagues, John will be remembered as a passionate advocate for Orkney - and in particular for Orkney's isles communities.

"His many years in Hoy gave him an invaluable insight into the needs and concerns of isles residents and he never missed an opportunity to champion their cause.

"As a former head teacher at three of our schools, John brought a depth of understanding to his chairmanship of the Education and Leisure Committee. He cared deeply for Orkney's children and young people and wanted the very best for them and for the wider education service.

"John will be much missed by fellow councillors and by the entire team at OIC. I would like to express all of our sympathies to John's family and his many friends."
