Where will the new Papdale Halls of Residence be built?

The new Papdale Halls of Residence (PHR) will be built on the vacant field between the existing PHR and existing KGS.  In deciding the location of the new building, note has been taken of the position of B listed Papdale House and the walled garden.

The new PHR will be located at the bottom of the proposed field maintaining the open green space in front of Papdale House.  The building will be orientated to maximise the warmth and light by the late afternoon/evening sun.

What will the new PHR look like?

The aim for the new PHR was to provide a “home from home” experience for its residents, and to provide spaces which were welcoming and comfortable and well designed areas for relaxation, social interaction whilst still being supervised.  More formal learning environments designed for study have also been incorporated.

The building consists of two segregated blocks of male and female accommodation interlinked at ground floor level by communal facilities, with the large female dormitory located closer to the walled garden.  A private residents garden will be located between the two wings.

The building will utilise a limited palette of time proven materials including standing seam roof, facing block, render and glass which are able to withstand the harsh climate.

What will the new PHR provide?

• Bedrooms;
• Social Areas;
• Secure Entrance and Reception; and
• Private courtyard/garden.

Bedrooms

The bidder has provided all the bedrooms with full en-suite facilities.  Within the bedrooms the desk is located within the bay or saw tooth window which maximises space and flexibility of layout.

Social Areas

A dining space and multi purpose common room have been created so that they can be utilised for more than one function.

The dining area can be divided into three different spaces which can access the secure garden.  Small tea bar facilities have been located at every level within each wing which allows students who are privately studying in their bedrooms the opportunity for a social break without becoming distracted by larger groups of residents in the main social spaces.

Secure Entrance and Reception

The entrance has been created to form a security bubble so to control visitor access to the building.  Offices are located in a central position which allows staff to passively supervise this and the remainder of the communal facilities.

Private courtyard/garden

A private residents garden will be located between the two wings this will provide shelter to maximise the warmth and light by the late afternoon/evening sun.  The garden can be accessed from the multipurpose spaces – dining and common rooms.

When will the new PHR start being built?

Commencement date for PHR is January 2012 with a construction programme in the order of 55 weeks.
When will the residents start to move to the new school?
The process of moving pupils from the existing PHR to the new build is proposed to take approximately 2 weeks.
