Severe storms of 8 and 9 December 2011

 

8 Dec at 4.30pm: Following Weather forecasts for the Orkney area from the MET Office and SEPA which included an amber warning for high winds from 5pm on Thursday 8 December until midnight from the northwest, and heavy rain and snow throughout the following morning, the Orkney Local Emergency Coordination Group issued bad weather reminders to the Orkney public via all local press outlets.

 
9 December at 10.22am - South Walls causeway update (issued to local press):

Orkney Islands Council has mobilised men and machinery to carry out repairs to the causeway at South Walls.
 
The causeway suffered serious damage during last night's storm and is closed to traffic.
 
Repair work will begin later today, once materials arrive on site.
 
The causeway could remain closed throughout the weekend. A detailed assessment will be carried out once the weather situation improves.

 

9 December at 1.30pm: As the bad weather continued in Orkney on December 9, the OLEGG issued further safety reminders to the public via local press.
