How Best To Contact Me

Anywhere you want, probably at home on 01856 761 258 or on my Council blackberry – details above.

Personal Profile

I was born in Kirkwall, where my father was a GP for over 25 years, and educated in Kirkwall and at Aberdeen University. After teacher training in Aberdeen, I worked briefly in Dingwall before returning home to teach science at KGS.

In 1993, after more than 15 years in teaching, I changed career, becoming a journalist with The Orcadian until 1999, before moving to BBC Radio Orkney as a producer. I later worked as a labourer on a local farm, but left to become a full time councillor after my election to OIC in May 2003.

An advocate of open government and local accountability, I believe OIC should be run by fewer, full-time paid councillors, elected under proportional representation. I believe this would increase the number of people who might wish to try for election to the council, enhancing democracy at this grass roots level of government.

I’m married to Elaine and we have four daughters, Catherine, Helen, Emily and Margaret.
