A referendum will be held on Thursday 18 September 2014 to decide on the question below:
“Should Scotland be an independent country?”
Voting will take place between the hours of 7am and 10pm. The situation of polling stations in the Orkney Islands Council Area and description of voters entitled to vote there is as contained in part 2 of the Notice of Poll, which is available in the Related Downloads section of this web page.
Applications to be included on the register of electors for the referendum MUST reach the Electoral Registration Officer at 8 Broad Street, Kirkwall, Orkney, KW15 1NX by Tuesday 2 September 2014. Any elector may apply for a postal vote or proxy at this referendum. Applications to vote by post or by proxy, to cancel or alter postal and proxy votes, or to change from postal to proxy voting at the referendum MUST reach the Electoral Registration Officer at the above address by 5pm on Wednesday 3 September 2014.
Emergency proxy votes at the referendum are available for anyone who
(i) suffers an illness or disability after the deadline for proxy applications on Wednesday 3 September 2014:or
(ii) discovers, after that deadline, that they will be unavoidably absent from their qualifying address on the day of the referendum: or
(iii) discovers after that deadline that they will be unable to go to the poll on the day of the referendum for occupational, employment or service reasons.
Such applications must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at the above address by 5pm on the day of the referendum, Thursday 18 September 2014.
