European Elections - May 22 2014
Elections for the European Parliament take place every 5 years. Between 22 May and 25 May 2014, European citizens in 28 member countries will vote in this year's European Parliamentary Election to elect 751 members of the European Parliament (MEPs).
From the May elections, the United Kingdom will have 73 MEPs. Scotland is one of 12 electoral regions in the UK and will have 6 MEPs. In the election, you have one vote to elect all of your MEPs. Each party puts forward a list of candidates known as the regional list and you vote for one of these lists or for an individual candidate. The number of MEPs that are elected from each party depends on their overall share of the votes cast. The list of parties contesting this election are available from the Related Downloads section of this webpage, in the document entitled Notice of Poll. The list of Election Agents are also available from the Related Downloads section.
In the United Kingdom, polling will take place on Thursday 22 May 2014. Polling Stations will be open from 07:00 to 22:00. You can also apply for a postal or proxy vote. The list of polling stations are available in the Related Downloads section.
As some member countries do not hold the election until 25 May, the counting of the votes will not take place until Sunday 25 May, with the declaration of the results sometime around 22:00.
You need to be on the electoral register to vote in this election. Those eligible are UK, Irish and qualifying Commonwealth citizens, aged 18 and older on polling day. Other European Union citizens can vote in the UK on completion of a UCS form. All voters must be registered by Tuesday 6 May. You can check that you are registered as an elector, or get further advice, by telephoning the Electoral Registration Office on 01856876222.
