Stromness Townscape Heritage Initiative – End of Project Survey results

This page is for historical purposes only. This consultation is now closed.

As part of the evaluation of the Stromness Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), an online survey was launched to obtain feedback from the public, visitors and those who had been involved in the Stromness THI project.  The survey was open to all, but also had specific sections for those who had received a grant, business owners and people who had attended training events.

Results are available via the Related Downloads section on this page.

Over the last 5 years, Stromness THI has invested grant money in the Conservation Area of Stromness, to aid the regeneration of the town centre, in an effort to make it a better place to live, work and visit.  The overall budget for the scheme, excluding private owner’s contributions, was £3.5million, which was primarily provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland and Orkney Islands Council.  This funding has resulted in a total public/private investment of £6.5 million into the town.

The grant funding has facilitated more than 50 building repair grants to property owners, grant aid for repaving of the street from the historically accurate source, grants to bring vacant properties back into use and training and education initiatives which have considered the history, heritage and development of the town, resulting in outputs which can be enjoyed by the community and visitors alike.

The survey results highlighted that the visual impact of the completed building works has had the greatest impact on the town, whilst, training and visitor offerings developed will leave a long lasting legacy.  The main drawback of the investment was cited as the disruption to the town from scaffolding and street closures, although many agreed that this was only a short term drawback.  A full overview of the results of the survey are available in PDF format from the ‘Related Downloads’ section of this web page.
