Read news and important reminders about the 2012 Local Government Elections from Orkney Islands Council's elections team and the Orkney Electorial Registration Office.

 

Important election dates:

  • Tuesday 13 March – Notice of election published
  • Wednesday 14 March – Nominations open
  • Wednesday 28 March (week starting) – Poll cards issued to everyone on the electoral roll
  • Thursday 29 March – Nominations close (4pm)
  • Friday 30 March – Notice of Poll (list of candidate standing) published
  • Wednesday 18 April – Postal vote and Postal Proxy Vote applications close (5pm)
  • Wednesday 18 April - Electoral Registration closes (12 midnight)
  • Monday 23 April (week starting) – Postal vote packs posted to everyone who’s registered for a postal vote
  • Wednesday 25 April – New applications for proxy votes close (5pm)
  • Thursday 3 May – Election day. Polling stations close at 10pm
  • Friday 4 May – Election count starts at 8am

 

News releases and reminders:

Final reminder on postal votes (13 April 2012) - Folk wanting to vote by post are being reminded they must apply to do so – application forms are not being sent out automatically.

Only days left to register to vote (11 April 2012) - Orkney Voters have just a few days left to make sure they can have their say in the Local Government Election on May 3.

Where will you be on election day? (06 April 2012) - Voters have just a few days left to make sure they can have their say in the Local Government Election on May 3, no matter where they may be on election day.

Isles urged to pop it in the post (06 April 2012) - People who live in Orkney’s isles communities are being urged to make sure they can vote in the Council election on May 3.

Isles get set to vote by post (3 April 2012) - Voters in Orkney’s island communities are being reminded to make sure they apply for a postal vote before April 18 for the May 3 Council elections.

Election candidates published (29 March 2012)  - The full list of candidates who have come forward to stand in the Local Government Election in Orkney on May 3 is now available on the OIC website.

Clock is ticking for would-be Councillors (23 March 2012) - Nominations close in under a week for anyone wanting to stand for election as an Orkney Islands Councillor on May 3.

Look out for your poll card (19 March 2012) - Poll Cards will be arriving through Orkney letterboxes over the next couple of days for all those eligible to vote at the Local Government Elections on May 3. 

Election nominations open (13 March 2012) - The official Notice of Election has been published (13 March) and nominations for the May 3 Council elections open on 14 March - unitl 29 March at 4pm.

Additional session for prospective Councillors (9 March 2012) - Orkney Islands Council is holding another information evening on March 19 for anyone interested in standing for the May 3 Local Government Election.

Are you ready for an election? (8 March 2012) - With Local Government elections on May 3 drawing ever closer, the Electoral Registration Officer in Orkney is urging residents to make sure they have secured their right to vote.

Thinking of standing for local government election? (28 February 2012) -  Orkney Islands Council is holding an information evening on March 5 at 5.30pm for anyone interested in standing for the May 3 Local Government Election.

Postal vote registration reminder for the isles (9 February 2012) - The Electoral Registration Officer in Orkney is urging voters in the isles who have not returned their postal vote application forms issued in mid December to do so as soon as possible.

Don't lose your right to vote (02 February 2012) - Orkney voters are being urged to check they are registered to vote ahead of the council elections across Scotland on May 3.
